SkypeOut
If this was a perfect world, there’d be no yodelling, we wouldn’t be ashamed of
our love handles and everyone would be using Skype to talk for free.
Unfortunately the world is far from perfect, and not everyone has Skype yet.
That’s why we have SkypeOut, a low cost way to make calls from Skype to friends
who still use those traditional landlines or mobile phones. That means calling
anyone, anywhere in the world at local rates.
Buy SkypeOut credit | SkypeOut Rates | Download Skype (required for SkypeOut)
Easy to get started.
Go to your account page (there’s a link on the Start tab or in the Tools menu in
Skype or you access it from the Store), select the amount of credit you wish to
add and make the payment with any major credit card. Switch back to Skype, enter
a phone number, hit the big, green phone button and start talking. That’s all
there is to it. When you run out of credits, it’s just a quick trip back to the
account page to top up and you’re good to go again.
Your SkypeOut credits will remain active for 180 days after your last SkypeOut
call.
Easy to keep going.
We don’t want you to sign any contract and we won’t be sending you anything like
a big, complicated monthly bill, just because you want to call other people from
your computer. Life is too short for that sort of thing. With Skype, you get a
straight price per minute rate to call wherever your friends are. The rate
doesn’t change for weekends, Mondays after 8 PM, weekdays from 9 to 5 or
anything like that… it stays the same. We’ve even come up with one rate for the
20 most popular call destinations: The SkypeOut Global Rate. It’s currently 1.7
Euro Cent (that would be around 2 US cents or 1.1 pence) per minute to more than
20 countries. But no matter what the rate is, calling your friend next door is
the same price as calling that same friend in London from Beijing, San
Francisco, Taipei… or even Manchester.
Something for nothing.
So there you have it. We’ve made SkypeOut an easy and cheap way of getting in
touch with your friends not yet on Skype. We guess the only thing we want you to
do, is tell them to start using Skype because then you could talk to one another
for free. This makes Skype the perfect companion to your old phone. Simple,
really.
Bottom line
If you want to use SkypeOut, make sure that you have the latest version of Skype:
Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Pocket PC.

Skype Voicemail
Hello. We’re Skype and we’ve got something
we would like to share with you.
What we’ve got is a simple bit of software we want to give you. It’ll let you
make free calls to your friends all over the world. And we don’t want any money
for it. It’s free.
You could think of us as the big, free Internet telephony company. We prefer to
think of ourselves as a big group hug, even a present. Yes… that’s it… we’re a
present… but without the ribbon.
Download Skype: Windows | Mac OS X | Linux | Pocket PC
Skype in a nutshell.
Our software’s quick and easy to get started with. Download, register, install,
plug in your headset, speakers or USB phone and start calling your friends. The
calls have excellent sound quality and are highly secure with end-to-end
encryption. You don’t even need to configure your firewall or router or any
other networking gear. It just, you know… works.
Bridging the gap.
And it doesn’t just work on Windows, like some other software you may know.
Skype is also for Mac OS X, Linux and PDAs using Pocket PC, with a native look
and feel for each platform. Talking, sending instant messages or even file
transfers work between different platforms like a charm.
Calling regular phone numbers.
If there weren’t enough ways for you to contact your friends, we have a little
thing called SkypeOut. It lets you make calls to old-fashioned phone numbers all
around the world. Landlines, mobile phones... it works with almost all of them.
SkypeOut is not free but it is pretty cheap, actually. You can read more about
SkypeOut if you wish.
Make sure you’re on the same page.
You know how Skype to Skype calls are free and work? Well, we’ve taken the same
recipe and applied it to file transfers. Since most things you want your friends
to see tend to be rather large, we made our file transfer work with all the file
sizes your operating system can handle. For most people, that’s between 2 or 4
gigabytes. And remember, it works from Windows to Mac to Linux and the other way
around. No platform problems here.
Nobody’s listening in.
When it comes to talking, instant messaging or transferring files, we’ve gone to
great lengths to make it secure. Skype automatically encrypts everything before
sending it through the internet. Likewise, on arrival everything is decrypted
on-the-spot and presented as crystal clear speak, text or a file transfer nobody
can intercept.
Yes, you heard it right.
All the security in the world wouldn’t matter, though, if you couldn’t hear the
other person. With Skype, you can. We’re working with the very best in the
industry to provide a sound quality far superior to what you’re used to from
ordinary telephones. If you will bear with us for a moment here we’d like to
share some technical stuff with you: with normal telephones you can only hear
sounds from 300 Hz to 3 kHz. Not so with Skype; We’re all over the spectrum,
from the lowest hum to the highest screetch. In other words: ‘F’ and ‘S’ will
sound like the two different letters they were meant to, and in the end you will
be able to have a much more natural conversation.
Getting the words out.
That also goes for conferences. It’s completely secure for you and up to four
others to get together to coordinate tactics in a game, make one of those
important business decisions or simply have a chat, even if you’re all on
different continents.
Needle. Haystack. Solution.
Searching for those long-lost relatives or just somebody to have a quick chat
with is also part of what Skype is all about. We have what we call a Global User
Directory. It’s a giant phonebook of all the people who use Skype. You can use
it to search for people you’d like to talk to, people who have the same birthday
or people who just happen to live in the same street as you.
Is anybody out there?
When you find somebody you know or even someone you would like to know, you add
them to your list of contacts. You can also write a little note to let them know
who you are and why you want to add them to your list. Handy, if your
separated-at-birth-twin finds you on Skype. When people are on your list, you
can see if they are online, offline, busy... or perhaps out to lunch.
When actual, spoken words fail you.
Did we mention that you can also send instant messages with Skype? Well, you
can. That’s nice for when you’re talking about a website and you want to send
that really long address or if you’re writing a song maybe. Either way, you can
send one of those little smiley faces along with your message. Smile to the
world and the world smiles back.

Skype Voicemail
Sometimes talking on Skype isn’t possible when the person you’re trying to call
is offline or busy. That’s why we have Skype Voicemail.
For a small fee (€ 5 for 3 months or € 15 for the year) you can send voicemail
messages to anyone on skype. It is like sending a chat but with the sound on.
You can record messages and send them to your friends without disturbing them.
You can pick up messages when you’re away or busy on another call and you can
keep the messages for as long as you like. In fact, you don’t have to be online
at all for someone to leave a message. People will be able to contact you when
you’re sleeping, walking the dog, mowing the lawn, knitting, playing with the
cat, ignoring people, practicing your tap dancing… and we could go on here. When
you can’t or don’t have the time to talk or pick up the phone, Skype Voicemail
does it for you.

Skype Voicemail
Skype is not a telephony replacement service and cannot be used for emergency
dialing.
SkypeIn
With SkypeIn, you can get your own, regular phone number. So if your friends who
aren’t using Skype want to call you by dialing a regular number, you can still
receive the call in Skype. No matter where you are.
So, if you have a Chicago-based SkypeIn number, but you’re living somewhere in
the suburbs of Paris, your Chicago area friends - or anyone! - can just dial
your SkypeIn number, and your Skype on the other side of the world starts
ringing... and your friends are only paying whatever their phone company charges
them for making a phone call to Chicago.
Of course people from everywhere in the world can call your SkypeIn number; but
if your SkypeIn number is in the United States and they call from another
country, they pay for the international nature of the call. And if you have
friends in many places, you can get up to 10 SkypeIn numbers in different places
and keep them guessing as to where you really are!
SkypeIn makes it much easier and less expensive for those of your friends,
family and business contacts who are not necessarily connected to the Internet
to call you and share that urgent news, or to just tell you that their cat had
nine (9!) kittens.
To make it even better, SkypeIn comes with a free Skype Voicemail subscription,
so when Aunt Jenny calls you about urgent pet-related matters, but you’re busy
or even offline, she can leave you a voicemail message (and you know she will).
And you can listen to it when you’re good and ready... but don’t forget to call
her back to congratulate. And perhaps to help her use Skype so she wouldn’t have
to pay for telling you about her cats.
Right now we’re just testing the service, so there might be some kinks and it
might not be entirely stable all the time. You can get up to 10 SkypeIn numbers
total from United States, United Kingdom, Denmark, Finland, France, Hong Kong,
Poland and Sweden. We’re continuously working on having numbers available in
many more countries around the world.
Buying a SkypeIn number
We’re still beta testing SkypeIn, so purchase is only available after you sign
in to your Account page.
SkypeIn prices
SkypeIn numbers are sold on a subscription basis:
a 12 month subscription is € 30 and 3 months is € 10.
