ANSWERS

General Questions

What is EarthLink DSL service?

EarthLink DSL gives you high-speed Internet access by converting your existing analog phone line into a high-speed digital phone line. Using ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) technology, EarthLink DSL delivers up to 3.0 megabits per second connection rates (which is up to 70 times faster based on the average speed between a 28.8K and 56k modem*).

How does EarthLink DSL service work?

DSL technology takes advantage of your existing phone line. While regular phone calls are transferred at relatively low frequencies, DSL data is transmitted at much higher frequencies. Both types of transmissions can occur simultaneously, without interference.

Voice and digital data are separated by a splitter placed in your home or office. The splitter sends voice transmissions to the telephone, and digital data transmissions to a DSL modem. Fax machines will operate as usual.

DSL offers a virtually instantaneous connection, with no lengthy dial-in process. It's almost like flipping on a light switch: DSL is always there, whenever you want it.

What is analog or dial-up roaming service?

Analog roaming service is dial-up Internet service that allows all our DSL customers to connect to the Internet with a traditional analog modem and a regular phone line. Your EarthLink DSL account includes 20 hours of free dial-up service every month (any extra hours would cost only $1 per hour). This service allows you to stay connected to your Internet service while you are away from your home computer in over 600 cities nationwide. So, you'll be able to get your email or surf the Web while you're on the road.

I already use EarthLink to connect to the Internet with a "traditional" (analog) modem. If I switch to EarthLink DSL, can I keep my email address?

Yes, when you switch to EarthLink DSL service your email address will remain the same. This includes all @earthlink.net and @mindspring.com email addresses.

Speed

How fast is DSL Service?

Really fast! DSL service provides connection speeds that are up to 70 times faster than a traditional dial-up connection based on the average speed between a 28.8k and a 56k modem*.

Is my EarthLink DSL speed guaranteed?

Connection speeds are not guaranteed and will depend on many factors such as the length and condition of the telephone wires connecting your house to your central office and general conditions on the Internet at any given time. As such, EarthLink offers a "best effort" service. That means we don't offer any throughput guarantees, but we will always do our best to provide you with the fastest connection your specific conditions will allow.

Connectivity

What does an "always on" connection mean?

EarthLink DSL gives you a dedicated connection between your computer and your phone network. There is no dialing in; no waiting to get online; and, no busy signals. The Internet is always a click away.

Will I get busy signals?

No. You will never get busy signals with DSL because there is no dialing involved. Instead, you are directly connected to the Internet via a dedicated connection that is used only by you.

EarthLink DSL and Your Telephone

Can I talk on the phone and use DSL Service at the same time?

Yes, you can talk on the phone and use your DSL service at the same time, on one phone line. There's no need to add an additional phone line for EarthLink DSL service.

Is my monthly telephone service included in the EarthLink DSL charges?

No. Your DSL connection will use your existing phone line, but your phone service will still be provided by your phone company. Your regular monthly telephone service charges are not included in EarthLink DSL service. Please see our Service Agreement for complete details.

What should I do if I want to change local or long distance phone companies?

Switching your local or long distance service could permanently disconnect your EarthLink DSL, depending on who EarthLink's DSL vendor partner is in your area. Before you think about switching either local or long distance phone companies, please give EarthLink a call at 1-800-EARTHLINK (800-327-8454) in order to avoid any interruption to your service.

What should I do if I want to change the phone number my DSL is installed on?

If you want to change your DSL phone number, please contact us first. We will need to place a new order for you in order to provide DSL service on your new phone number.

I have only one phone jack for my PC and my phone. How can I get my computer connected and still use my phone in that room?

This may require special inside wiring. A third party installer may be able to rewire the phone jack in the room where you want the computer. Please discuss the details with your local phone provider or a third party installation company.

Availability

Can I get EarthLink DSL in my area?

Probably. EarthLink DSL is available nationwide in most major metropolitan areas. But there is a chance that your location may not yet be serviceable. You can use our availability form to check to see if EarthLink DSL is available in your area. If DSL is not yet available, sign up on our priority list and we will contact you as soon as it is. If you sign up and it turns out that your location is not serviceable, you will receive a full refund.

How long does it take to get EarthLink DSL?

Approximately two to four weeks. During this time, we work with your phone company to provision your phone line for DSL. Installation steps may vary depending on several factors, including how quickly your line can be qualified, and whether you need to be home for your service activation date.

Is EarthLink DSL service available to locations with a commercial address?

Standard Self-Installation

How does EarthLink DSL Self-Installation work?

EarthLink will provide you with the hardware, software and technical support necessary to get online. You will need to verify that your computer is equipped with a Network Interface Card. Within 7 to 10 days after your activation date, we will send you an EarthLink Installation Kit, which contains the hardware you will need to self-install your EarthLink DSL. The Installation Kit is accompanied by a QuickStart Card which will provide you with step-by-step instructions on how to: plug filters into your phone jack; install your modem; and, operate/run your DSL software.

Professional Installation

What if I desire a Professional Installation?

EarthLink DSL is easily self-installed, however if you wish to have a Professional Installer set up your EarthLink DSL, a technician from a company of your choosing can visit your home to assist in your installation. When your DSL account is active, you will need to call and schedule a technician to come to your house to install your DSL hardware and the EarthLink software.

To find a Professional Installer near you, we recommend you look in the Yellow Pages or conduct an online search. Many computer repair companies also perform this service or may be able to make a recommendation.

All scheduling and billing arrangements for the Professional Installation are independent of EarthLink.

The cost of a Professional Installation varies. Some companies charge a flat fee, and others have scaled charges that depend on factors such as inside wiring or computer type.

Switching ISP/DSL Providers
